When you are purchasing an air purifier, you will invariably come across the term “Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR)” by the seller or on brochures and websites.
What exactly is CADR and how can it help you to make a better purchasing choice? Here’s the answer:
What is CADR?
In early 1980s, the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) saw the need for an objective test method to measure the performance of air filters and purifiers in the market regardless of their underlying technology. As a result, the standard ANSI/AHAM AC-1-2006 was created to meet this need.
Clean Air Delivery Rate indicates an air filter’s effectiveness in reducing smoke, dust and pollen particles. The comparison is done for particles between the range of 0.10 and 11 microns.
How is Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) measured?
CADR is expressed in the volume of filtered air delivered by an air cleaner. Hence the numbers you see are mentioned in cubic feet or cubic meter per hour. The higher the value of CADR, the faster the purifier filters the air.

CADR plays a major role in determining the effectiveness of an air purifier. With CADR measurement you can get an instant comparison between the abilities of two or more similarly priced home air purifiers. Thus, helping you – as a buyer – in making an informed choice.

Number of Filters:
A high-quality air purifier should have at least 3 air filters – a pre-filter, a HEPA filter and an activated carbon filter, along with their efficiency, size and amount of filter media. Never Get Mislead by Coverage Area:
The coverage area is related to CADR. It is the total area, which an air purifier can effectively clean with the certified CADR.
Coverage area can be very misleading as there are companies writing coverage area upto 1027 sq. ft. for a CADR of 397m3/Hr.
Now this is where they mislead you the customer … When they say 1027 sq. ft. they mean a room volume of 10270 cu. ft. (taken a standard height of 10 ft)
This converts to 291 cu. mtr., and for a machine with 397 cu. mtr. per hour that would mean just about 1.3 air changes per hour.
Compare that with our XJ-4500H with a CADR of 750 m3/Hr. That would give you 2.6 Air Changes Per Hour for the same room dimensions.
So its not about coverage area alone, its about how fast and how many cycles of air changes can a machine do in a given room volume.
So any company mentioning coverage area is not the correct metric to choose an air purifier since they are not based on any facts.
The only 3 points that really matter for any comparison are: –

- No. of Filters + Quality of Filters
- After Sales cost of Filters
